  • Bring out the best in your quirky child

Quirky kids are my passion. They have this wonderful creative potential but they often struggle and under-perform educationally. It is most rewarding to see them gain skills and strategies to help cope and flourish in everyday life. If a child reports they received player of the day at soccer, felt confident giving a speech, or their writing/drawing has improved, I know I have facilitated a positive change in that child’s life. Change is experienced over a series of sessions and incorporates parents/caregivers implementing a playful movement programme at home encouraging consistency. Below is a range of outcomes that can be experienced after a series of sessions: Learning can become easier and faster (eg. reading, writing, physical coordination) as the underlying physiology around learning becomes more efficient Challenges in learning and development may reduce Retained primitive reflex movements are integrated, i.e no longer observable. Decrease in sensory overload, sound, taste, tactile defensiveness Improvement in balance Positive changes to fine motor and handwriting skills Increased ability to focus and attend/complete tasks Improved performance in sports/whole body movement e.g. soccer, swimming, dancing, martial arts, the arts and drama Decrease in ‘explosive’ behaviour An overall increase in risk-taking behaviour, confidence and calmness Best results are achieved when there is commitment to a daily movement programme, with the parent being actively involved. Sessions are spaced 3-4 weeks apart and typically over a 6 month period. • The Use Of Educational Kinesiology In A Case Of Phantom Pain

For the past 18 years, I've been integrating Educational Kinesiology into my chronic pain practice. Clinical research I conducted in 2005 provided evidence of the effectiveness of Educational Kinesiology protocols in treating clients with musculoskeletal pain, regardless of its duration. Last year a client really pushed my therapy to the most challenging pain problem, phantom pain. "Here I want to share with you three of the Educational Kinesiology specific treatments that were used. Used to a surprisingly successful level." Pain In A Limb That Isn't There? Imagine if you had lost an arm, leg or foot due to trauma or disease - but that the limb, that you no longer had, suffered with constant pain? At times my client Simon (not his real name) would find his pain unbearable. The pain associated with phantom pain is often used as an introduction to neurology; the nervous system is causing the pain, as there cannot be any physical input coming from the limb as it's no longer there. Pain management specialists and neurologists often use phantom limb pain to demonstrate the complexity of constant or chronic pain and how the nervous system and the brain itself should be taken into consideration during the treatment of chronic pain. How Educational Kinesiology Improves Brain Function The strength of Education Kinesiology lies in the simple intentional movements that Educational Kinesiology practitioners use that have a fundamental effect on your brain. Changes sometimes can occur instantly as if by magic. Other changes need more time requiring the intentional movements or techniques to be repeated for some days or weeks. This shows that the neural networks and, concomitant connections need time to be established. What I'm going to share with you here are three of the actual treatments or techniques that I used at various times throughout Simon's treatment. Activity One - A Breathing Technique To Stop Pain. One answer to tackle his unbearable pain came to mind. It was a technique that I'd used in my initial clinical research project in 2006. An elderly woman was living with a broken humeral head and was on a waitlist for surgery. As she moved around home she constantly worried about her balance as knocking on her shoulder produced unbearable pain. Here's the technique I taught her to use: Take a big deep breath. Hold your breath for a moment. Exhale using three short puffs, like trying to blow out a candle. Repeat this with three more deep breaths. Just as we can distract a two-year-old child, we use this concentrated, focused technique to distract the brain from the incessant pain messages. With continual use, this can change reactions and patterns in the brain. Activity Two - Contralateral Movement To Simultaneously Fire Neural Pathways. An interesting thing happens when messages travel from your brain to your body to make your leg or arm move; the nerves that carry the messages actually cross over in the brain stem, the bottom section of your brain. When you walk, the left hemisphere of your brain directs your right arm; your right directs the left leg, thereby requiring both hemispheres to fire simultaneously. When you are extremely stressed or suffering severe pain normal brain functioning can be difficult if not impossible, so it was not surprising that Simon, when lying on the massage table found contralateral movement impossible. It took several consultations and weeks of practice to be able to start this integrated movement using the opposite arm to leg. Activity Three - Writing By Continually Crossing The Midline The final technique I'll discuss today is an activity that was used towards the end of Simon's treatment. It's interesting to note here that Simon had always used printing whenever he did any writing as opposed to cursive writing that most of us use. That was about to change. I think the easiest way to describe this activity is to watch the video below. I suggest you arm yourself with blue tac, blank sheets of paper, a pen or coloured pencils, as this is a very fun activity. "Educational Kinesiology is about making changes, not only did Simon's pain reduce with many techniques and his understanding of my explanations of neurology, he also had a profound change in his relationships, attitude and enjoyment of life." Integrating The Use Of Educational Kinesiology Educational Kinesiology utilises the brain’s ability to change, neuroplasticity. The success of the three techniques above is their use and practice when appropriate. For example, practising contralateral movement to improve brain integration you must continually stopping and restarting, as this is the challenging part, initiating the neural firing. The final technique of writing the alphabet with crossing the midline activity, has a multitude of benefits; not only improving handwriting and creative ideas, but it can also be a very calming process. I have often used this activity to great effect with people recovering from a stroke; they really enjoyed sitting and doing this activity, especially on a large sheet of paper. For this reason, and seeing changes in their happiness, I believe that it’s a tool for personal development and growth. In her book Smart Moves, Carla Hannaford (2005) talks about the misconceptions of "micro-interventions", such as those discussed above, simple movements that take little time, and no involvement in technology, hence can they really be useful? My answer to that is a resounding yes! The practitioners of Educational Kinesiology will have many similar stories to tell and I'm sure Simon will always be an advocate for the activities we did together that resulted in not only a reduction of pain, techniques to use in future difficult times and a real improvement in personal and social interactions. This article is the opinion of the author Jean Jordan and should not replace professional diagnosis and treatment from your doctor. • A Series of Educational Kinesiology Stories

Over the coming months we will be sharing personal stories from our Educational Kinesiology/Brain Gym NZ community. Covering how individuals found this life changing modality and their journey to date. We hope you enjoy! Helene Young's story. I first started on my Kinesiology journey in 1980, with two left feet, high anxiety and in retrospect some tendencies of hyperactivity! In 1991, while working with Young Unemployed I was sent to my first Brain Gym training which was revolutionary. To date, I could not swim without stopping for breath. My goal was to swim a length and breathe with ease. After practicing the Brain Gym movements, I could feel the difference in my before and after movements but did not believe that simple exercise could make a difference! At lunchtime I drove to the pool and YES I could do it! Since then I have travelled to courses and conventions across Australia, Switzerland, France and Canada. All life enhancing experiences! I believe it is the ‘best thing since sliced bread’ , and delivers far more than one expects. It creates balance, harmony and teaches incredible tools for personal change, resilience and life balance. I can report, I no longer have two left feet and I’m far less hyperactive. I have used Brain Gym with children, adults, teenagers, colleagues and of course, myself. In work places, schools, car parks, in critical incident call outs and in homes with developmentally delayed children! At 74, I call myself a provocateur/space changer. I absolutely love seeing the power to change lives in a flash and the ongoing empowerment Educational Kinesiology can bring to lives. It has taught me that miracles happen every single day. Clear boundaries empower us all. If we set goals we enable our self to achieve them. Being true to ourselves and open to loving unconditionally. • Teaching Brain Gym In The Classroom

Hi, my name is Fatima and I have been practising Brain Gym at various schools around the globe, in the primary and secondary sector for more than 20 years. I want to share and celebrate the benefits of using Brain Gym in my classroom . It really is a win-win for students. Students are facing ongoing challenges on a daily basis at home and at school. I am passionate about helping students achieve, promoting students emotional well-being, and boosting students’ self-esteem by using Brain Gym. Brain Gym which can be described as that simple powerful tool that makes things happen. Simple Brain Gym Movements Enhance Students’ Social, Emotional, and Academic Growth Brain Gym was developed in order to stimulate, release, or relax students involved in particular types of learning situations (Dennison & Dennison, 1994). Through Brain Gym movements students are able to access parts of the brain previously inaccessible. Allowing children to move in the classroom in a positive manner will unfold their unique and complete intelligence so that they will not be blocked, but free to learn (Dennison, P., & Dennison, G. (1 994). Brain Gym teacher's edition revised. California: Edu-Kinesthetics, Inc.) I am passionate about supporting the Hauora of my students. As a middle school teacher in an ESOL classroom I am constantly looking for ways to boost student attention, interest in learning and motivation to succeed. Help your students develop skills using Brain Gym How do I create a participatory environment where ESOL children feel confident, safe and are able to engage co-operatively? How do I empower my students, give them a ‘voice’ and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills? How do I foster confidence and self-esteem improving the quality of self in my students? Brain Gym can be described as that simple powerful tool It builds self-efficacy Calms the body and the mind Helps learners to become connected, competent and confident. Allows learning to take place spontaneously Encourages learners to work together and help each other Helps learners to be more present, attentive, focused, and engaged in their learning. Encourages learners to take risks, to ask questions, and to share their ideas Helps develop fine motor skills, developing pencil grip Students respond positively to the Brain Gym Movements Reflections from Term 1: Sharing positive outcomes from the classroom Students participate with enthusiasm and display an improved sense of focus and concentration. Their reading and writing skills have improved dramatically. Many students are now reading at or above their expected level, and their written work has become more organised, coherent, and expressive. Neurophysiologist and educator, Carla Hannaford, found that incorporating movement into her classroom had a significant impact on her students. She began by using body brain exercises at the beginning of each day. Within a few weeks, she began to notice some positive changes. She even stated that her students "..became more attentive and their grades improved" (as found in Hannaford, 1996, p. 67). Hauora is a Māori philosophy of health unique to Aotearoa. It includes the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of the students. It comprises taha tinana (the physical dimension), taha hinengaro (the mental dimension), taha hinengaro (mental health and emotions); taha wairua (spiritual health), taha tinana (physical health), and taha whānau (family) as the key of one's wellbeing. • A Series of Educational Kinesiology Stories

Over the coming months, we will be sharing personal stories from our Educational Kinesiology/Brain Gym NZ community. Covering how individuals found this life changing modality and their journey to date. We hope you enjoy! Margaret Underwood's story. What started me on the road to becoming an Educational Kinesiologist? A Tai Chi student of mine, a kinesiologist, showed me how to do the buttons (Brain Buttons, Earth Buttons and Space Buttons) one day after a class in the late 1980s. She gave me a simple explanation of how they worked to help the brain and body become better coordinated. A few days later an athlete who came to Tai Chi was struggling to learn a new movement. She could do the bottom half of the movement and the top half separately, but she couldn’t put the two together. After 5 minutes I remembered Earth Buttons. We did that together briefly and bingo, she could do the movement perfectly – top and bottom halves working together in unison. I went home and thought about that. Ever since I have used the buttons to start my Tai Chi classes. It has saved me time, made learning easier for folks and they in turn have shared them with family and friends. I was hooked. Anything that speeded up learning to that degree I was keen to learn more about. Today, I use Brain Gym daily in my personal life, with all my students - no matter what I am teaching (Tai Chi, education workshops, Brain Gym, Reiki, etc). Having trained as an Educational Kinesiologist/Brain Gym Instructor/Consultant over 20 years ago I also use it with one on one clients. I like to start my day with 100 Cross Crawl Sit-ups before I get out of bed. I encourage my 101 year old mother to use it often as well (her mind is just fine, a little short term memory loss, but her cognitive faculties are quite in order). If I’m running low in energy I do Brain Gym. If I need to refocus on an activity - I reach for my Brain Gym movements. Flying in turbulence I use the Hook Up to calm my fellow passengers. I teach it to everyone I meet who looks like they might need it. I love Brain Gym because it is easy, requires no special equipment and most importantly it works! It is also one of the fastest ways I have discovered to bring about change in your life, with grace and ease. • PACE the Perfect Saviour

Enacting PACE with passion, spontaneity and positive energy sparked off a lovely positive energy around the room. I seized the moment when the principal agreed to giving me a quick moment to talk to the staff about Brain Gym. We started off with PACE. I demonstrated, explained and described the meaning of each movement. So PACE became the focus of the session. In context, PACE was the SAVIOUR of the day. Friday morning was an absolutely gloomy one in Auckland. The weather was unsettled and the rain was continuously pouring down outside. It was the onset of “A state of emergency being declared in Auckland." The PACE session really went well. Positive feedback from the principal, the staff including the maths facilitator was present, who commented this. I am definitely implementing PACE as an introduction to my Professional Development sessions with teachers. It is simple, and it makes sense. It definitely made a difference to myself and the atmosphere in the room. In my next session, I aim to present a few PowerPoint slides showing the 30 teachers and 20 learning assistants how my students received their daily dosage of Brain Gym. Explaining the effectiveness of the Brain Gym movements and share a few success stories.

  • The story of Vihaan.

“Brain Gym will not change Vihaan’s life, but whilst learning how it works and doing the movements daily, he enjoys moments where he can creatively and confidently make choices that are beneficial to him.” Vihaan is a ten-year-old boy; he represents the majority of students in my class who face numerous challenges at home and in the classroom. When he first attended my class, learning seemed like a distant concept for him. I noticed Vihaan was: All over the place in the classroom Distracting students around him Needed constant reminders to listen and focus Constantly sought acknowledgement and praise. Te achers and even the school’s social worker labelled him as “uncontrollable” and “rude”. I have numerous Brain Gym success stories about the students in my class, but I will focus on one of the highlights and proud moments that happened in term 3. I understand and know that Brain Gym will not change Vihaan’s life, but whilst learning how it works, and doing the movements daily, he is enjoying moments where he can creatively and confidently make choices that are beneficial to him. I made it my mission to support his growth in every possible way. Vihaan has always been good at running. Cross-country is his speciality and it is a popular event for Term 3. Before the cross-country race, including the days leading up to the event and the morning of the event, Vihaan came to me and repeatedly stated “I am not good at running”, “I can’t run”, “I am not going to run.” I kept on saying, “Vihaan, you are good. Don’t put yourself down. Just run and have fun.” After morning tea, before the cross-country race, I noticed something remarkable. Three boys, including Vihaan, quietly retreated to the back of the classroom. They were looking at the Brain Gym charts. I saw them drinking water and rubbing their Brain Buttons and doing Cross Crawl and Lazy 8’s, the Calf Pump and the Gravity Glider movements. I thought to myself, these movements are included in the Energy exercises, the Midline Movements, and the Lengthening Activities. I watched and observed them closely. From the integrated movements, they chose The Sea Lion and Turning 8’s.  These movements are related to trust and acceptance: “I am afraid to take risks” “I reject myself as not good enough” “I’ll never get it right”   " Assimilation and block" “I love myself" “I  reject my feelings" “I learn at my own pace" Analysing their choices, these movements were so appropriate and spot on as to what these boys needed at that moment. “The power of helping one child” The race ended, and to everyone's amazement, Vihaan crossed the finish line first among all the Year 6 boys. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, with his name ringing through the air. His face, once marked by self-doubt, now bore a soft smile of accomplishment. He had not only won the race but also conquered the limitations he had imposed on himself. Every morning, we welcome the day’s programme with PACE. Students would choose a goal for the day. We PACE the goal. For the learning menu, the students would choose movements from Midline Movements, Energy Exercises and/or Lengthening Activities. Then they go to the adventure park, do a few balancing movements and core strengthening movements. This routine has really become a cherished part of the day. Once a week, before a reading session, I would do a re-patterning with Vihaan and a group of students. There has been a remarkable shift in his attitude towards reading, and his levels and comprehension have significantly improved. I cannot be prouder to have been Vihaan’s teacher and witness his remarkable journey of growth. This is a testament to the power of helping one child. The incredible strides, the sparkle in his eyes, have been made possible by the Brain Gym movements, the re-patterning sessions, the support, acknowledgement and encouragement. It has transformed this boy emotionally and socially. Vihaan is on a journey of realising his potential and achieving greatness. • A Series of Educational Kinesiology Stories

Over the coming months we will be sharing personal stories from our Educational Kinesiology/Brain Gym NZ community. Covering how individuals found this life changing modality and their journey to date. We hope you enjoy! Jean Jordan's story. A Life Changing Experience - With Educational Kinesiology. Educational Kinesiologists don't work with patients or clients, we work with learners. We believe life is about learning, in fact learning from experience and intentional movements. This not only means people who come to us for help, but we as Educational Kinesiologist Consultants are also the learners, trainers and faculty members. The effect of Educational Kinesiology can be life changing. It changed mine. In 2015 I was upgrading my skills with a course called 'Optimal Brain Organisation'. This course explores how people hold their pens and how they move their hands across the page. And as I said above it's about experiential learning. The activity we did was very simple; we had to write a four-part story. But the constraints were; to get a sheet of paper, fold it into four and write separately on each quadrant, without looking at the rest of the writing. Also, two parts of the four were written with our dominant hand, that's the usual hand with which we write, and two parts of the four were written with our non-dominant hand, in my case my left hand. Lastly, we had to hold the pen differently each time. You may be thinking, so she did some writing and she used both hands. What on earth was life changing about that? As I went through this exercise my brain constructed a story. Briefly, it was to do with a fountain in the centre of a town square, it was first frozen and then it exploded. Surprising the people who lived around the town square. We took turns reading our stories aloud to the group. When I opened up my paper and read the four sections, unbeknownst to me, it had become a continuous story. When I read it out loud to the group after an initial stunned silence, I was showered with praise, accompanied by amazement. It was that creative. To have praise from my peers to such an extent changed something about me. It is now 2023 and also post COVID-19, which changed a lot of things for a lot of people. For myself, I am now a health blogger writing to educate and provide self-help techniques for those people who live with chronic pain. I believe without the brain gym experience, without the positive reaction of my peers on the training course, this person who is, in fact, dyslexic, would not be taking this amazing step into a new online business. Everyone will read and judge my writing, but that no longer matters, as the important thing is to get the message out to those experiencing pain.
